The King’s Cross Carbon Fund, which has been supporting local carbon reduction initiatives since 2021, is now open for new applications.
Launched by the King’s Cross estate – which is owned and managed by the King’s Cross Central Limited Partnership (KCCLP) – the Fund offers grant funding of up to £150,000 to projects that aim to cut emissions and improve air quality across Camden. Grants over £150,000 will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Applications will be reviewed by the King’s Cross Carbon Fund Board, which includes representatives from Camden Council and Related Argent, the developer and asset manager of the King’s Cross estate.
Special consideration will be given to projects based in both the King’s Cross and St Pancras and Somers Town wards, and, where data is available, the Board will also prioritise projects which provide a greater carbon saving per pound spent.
Eligible projects must demonstrate a reduction in emissions from electricity, fossil fuels or vehicle use. The Board will also consider projects that achieve carbon capture or remove air and water pollutants beyond statutory requirements.
Case study: PowerUp North London
In 2024, the King’s Cross Carbon Fund donated £50,000 to PowerUp North London to part-fund the installation of more than 200 solar panels on the roof of Regent High School in Somers Town. The initiative will cut more than 30 tonnes of CO₂ a year and reduce energy costs for the school. The project also received support from Camden Council and the Mayor of London’s Future Neighbourhoods initiative.
The King’s Cross Carbon Fund forms part of the King’s Cross estate’s broader environmental, social and governance (ESG) activity, which includes seven priority areas: delivering net zero by 2035, creating a circular economy, connecting with nature, creating healthy spaces, maximising social value, safety and belonging and tackling inequality.
Jamie Quinn, Related Argent’s Sustainability Director for King’s Cross said: “The King’s Cross Carbon Fund is designed to empower and support local carbon reduction initiatives. Accessing grant funding can be challenging, therefore stifling vital progress in reaching net zero. The Fund is a brilliant way to help local, community-led projects that share our ambition to cut carbon and create a cleaner, greener future for everyone in the area. We encourage anyone with an interesting or innovative carbon cutting idea to apply and we look forward to reviewing the range of applications we receive.”
